Golden Rules for Hosting Iftar

Ramadan is all about spending quality time with family and friends, and enjoying the company of those close to you. If you’re hosting a Ramadan iftar at home, here are a few things to keep in mind for a memorable evening…

Before:
– These days, decorations are just as much a part of the Ramadan spirit as ever! Consider hanging a few Ramadan lights, a Ramadan Kareem sign on your door, or go all out with lanterns, candles and displays.

– Make sure you stock up on everything you’re going to need for the evening a few days in advance. This will make it easier for you to plan your meal, snacks and beverages ahead of time.

– Every item for the meal needs to be prepared in advance, as to avoid delays. Choose an array of dishes for your menu, and foods that can be reheated easily.

-If you’re preparing more than one dish, make sure you make a cooking plan and stick with it. You might get a little flustered if you end up taking on numerous tasks, so make sure you plan ahead.

– Play a local channel on your TV, so you and your guests can easily hear the call to prayer (athan) and when it’s time to break the fast.

During:
-For iftar, make sure that you serve dates and water at the start of the meal, and have them ready and on hand for guests.

– Ensure that you have plenty of water, juices and Ramadan beverages available for your guests that are easy to reach and readily available (i.e. not hidden in the back of the fridge).

– Have prayer rugs and a suitable area prepared for those who might like to pray.

After:
– Let your guests know that they are free to watch TV, as a majority of people like to catch up on their shows right after iftar.

– Usher guests to a pre-set table that includes hot and cold beverages as well as desserts, and make sure that it’s replenished frequently throughout the night.

– Ramadan evenings are all about fun! Dust off the board games and bring out the deck of cards for a fun-filled evening. Other entertainment and game options include charades and Mafia.
